Any small life has own life time.
The butterfly life has birth and death in the short arch of time.
As the butterfly feels whole life in 3weeks, we explore how deep we feel our own life and presence through this 3 weeks.
And at the same time, we explore how we express it on the stage through this 3 weeks Butoh workshop.
On July 30th, as the final presentation, we will have long performance day with each participants solo or duo in studio
and group improvisation, butoh procession in the city of pontedera. Like park in Pontedera, street in the town, square of station, riverside with sunset, etc.

This 3 weeks contains these 3 themes.

–          breathing animal nature

–          4seasons of life

–          Yin- yang, Apollo and Dyonisus

Breathing animal nature

Breath is essential for all the lives. The earth is also breathing through hundreds millions year. We can find many different breath in this world. Breath of animals. Breath of stones. Breath of lights… We use breath which is a starting point for all existence as a theme.

The movement which can be found from breath is not formed from outside, but shaped from inside of all the lives very naturally. In other words, the movements coming out through breath is a good indication to find the shape of life which exists inside of the life.

In Butoh movement, breath is a very important essence.  We are going to find new various movements which come out through breathing.

4seasons of life – embracing life and death with butoh –

“Spring” – Growth. Blooming. Gift from previous season. Precious turning point of life. Nourished soil in winter give new life for flowers. Death transform into Life.

“Summer” – Summer Sun has two faces. One face is strong energy for plants to grow as much as they can.

Another face is too strong energy for plants to make them dry and to sack their life with too much sun.

“Autumn” – Even began to wither even lose power, the beauty of the flower is lurking quietly. What is this “beauty” ? For the next generation to take over the seed, it is beauty of bliss, beauty of sacrifice.

“Winter” – This season symbolizes death. Flower that die will return to the soil with nourishment. Where  the spirit of flowers will go. Is this spirit also a gift for the Spring?

Become flowers, and dance this 4 seasons of their life. Also insect, animal and spirit. Naturally we discover “4 seasons of human life ”. This is the dance of our life. Each of us can find a lot of precious dance in our life. Getting more deeper this 4 seasons theme, it reaches to the mystery of life. It faces most important theme of my butoh “bliss, purification, love, requiem, sacrifice, life & death”.Dance deeply with embracing life & death. Then, the dance which comes from inner body start telling  “death is part of life circulation”. Forget everything, with embracing all the beautiful 4 Seasons.

Yin- yang, Apollo and Dyonisus

« Apollonian energy, Dionysian energy »

Yin and yang. Light and darkness, shape and energy,  Apollo and Dionysus. Two principles which conflict and complement each other. We will explore our body as breath, movement and voice, related to Apollo and Dionysus primordial energies.

The Power of light, symmetry, harmony and transcendental of  the Apollonian presence and the power of earth, fire, ecstasy of the Dionysian action shall be expressed through the body with movement and sound.

At the same time we work on some elements of Japanese mythology:

-Amaterasu, female deity, close to Apollo’s sun energy.

-Susanoh, male deity and Amanouzume, female deity, both related to Dionysian energy.

Approaching those elements, we dance Apollo and Dionysus’s male and female energies, as two sides of a same face.

Through Greek and Japanese’s mythologies, beyond Europe and Asia, we try to reach some archetypes of the humanity.
